Introducing Foghorn Espresso: Built for Balance, Sweetness, and Complexity

Foghorn Espresso is a purpose-built blend designed specifically for espresso brewing. Learn how roasting technique, origin selection, and balance come together in every shot.

Design

Introduction: A Blend Built for Espresso from the Start

Not every coffee is meant for espresso.

Foghorn Espresso was developed specifically with espresso brewing in mind — from bean selection to roast profile to final blend composition.

The goal was simple: create a coffee that delivers consistent, balanced, and expressive flavor across a wide range of espresso machines and brewing styles.

Origin Selection: Brazil and Peru

Foghorn Espresso brings together coffees from Brazil and Peru, each selected for how they contribute to the final cup.

Rather than roasting them together, each origin is treated individually to bring out its best characteristics.

  • The Brazil component is developed to enhance body and sweetness
  • The Peru component is roasted to highlight complexity and layered flavor

By roasting separately, we’re able to control how each coffee behaves before blending — giving us a more precise final result.

Roast Approach: Balancing Sweetness and Complexity

Each coffee in the blend follows a different roast path.

One is taken to a medium profile, preserving structure and nuance.

The other is pushed slightly further to a more developed profile, bringing out deeper sugars and chocolate tones.

The goal is not to overpower one with the other — it’s to create balance.

When combined, these profiles complement each other:

  • Sweetness becomes more pronounced
  • Acidity is controlled
  • Complexity builds across the cup

Roasting for Espresso: Controlling Acidity and Solubility

Espresso presents a unique challenge.

Because brew times are short, the coffee must be roasted in a way that allows it to extract efficiently and consistently.

To achieve this, we adjust:

  • Airflow within the roaster
  • Total roast time
  • Development phase

These adjustments help tame acidity while improving solubility — one of the most important factors in espresso roasting.

Why Solubility Matters

Solubility determines how easily flavors are extracted during brewing.

With espresso, extraction happens quickly. If the coffee isn’t roasted correctly, the result can be:

  • Under-extracted
  • Sour
  • Unbalanced

Foghorn Espresso is developed to extract properly across a wide range of machines, helping maintain its intended flavor profile even with slight variations in brewing.

Flavor Profile: Layered Chocolate and Caramel Sweetness

Foghorn Espresso is built around sweetness and depth.

In the cup, you can expect:

  • Caramel-like sweetness upfront
  • Smooth milk chocolate tones
  • A transition into deeper, bittersweet dark chocolate
  • A clean, balanced finish

The flavor evolves as it cools, revealing more complexity with each sip.

Built for Versatility

Foghorn Espresso was designed to perform across multiple styles of preparation.

It works exceptionally well in:

  • Espresso shots
  • Americanos
  • Milk-based drinks like lattes and cappuccinos

In milk drinks, the chocolate and caramel notes become more pronounced and approachable. As a straight shot, the complexity and structure stand out more clearly.

Conclusion: Precision in Every Step

Foghorn Espresso is the result of intentional decisions at every stage:

  • Selecting complementary origins
  • Roasting each component independently
  • Controlling airflow and development
  • Focusing on solubility and balance

The result is a blend designed not just for espresso, but for consistency, clarity, and depth across every cup.
